(FORT WAYNE) – Authorities have identified the man who was shot and killed Tuesday by a Fort Wayne Police Officer.

Allen County Deputy Coroner Toni Mayes says an autopsy conducted on the man identified him as 31 year old Gabon Kasey Benson of Fort Wayne. The cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds.

At approximately 7:15 AM Tuesday, DeKalb County Community Corrections asked the Fort Wayne Police Department to help find a man who was able to get out of DeKalb County custody.

A short time later, Fort Wayne Police say Benson was found on the campus of Purdue University Fort Wayne. He was believed to be armed with a handgun near an apartment complex. Benson was then spotted walking on campus towards a parking lot near the entrance off Coliseum and North Anthony Boulevards.

Fort Wayne Police Chief Scott Caudill says Benson didn’t respond to commands from police, and officers saw that he had a gun. Just after 7:45 AM, officers contacted Fort Wayne Dispatch saying shots had been fired and Benson had been shot.

Benson was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer involved in the shooting was not injured. The matter is still under investigation.
