(COLDWATER) – Authorities say a Coldwater Lake man is competent to stand trial for an incident that happened over one year ago.
Branch County District Court officials say the criminal cases of 22 year old McCain Snyder can proceed. He is facing two charges of assault with intent to murder; along with two charges of failure to stop at the scene of a serious impairment crash, after he allegedly ran down and injured the grandparents of a girl he was supposedly stalking.
In addition Snyder is facing three charges of aggravated stalking on persons other than the crash victims; and charges of using a computer to commit a crime and malicious use of a telephone service.
Michigan State Police say on June 10, 2024 Snyder allegedly drove his pick up into the grass as he drove out of Simco Drive in Kinderhook Township, striking 81 year old David Sluyter and his 77 year old wife Jill Sluyter. Troopers say the Sluyter’s were walking to Snyder's mother’s home to let her know about accusations Snyder made against them.
Troopers say the Sluyter’s told them that Snyder came to their home earlier that day, accusing them of sexually abusing their granddaughter, that Snyder was accused of stalking. The Sluyter’s told the troopers that Snyder told them he would be back.
Investigators say Snyder’s mother told them that her son said the Sluyter’s assaulted their granddaughter. However, the girl has denied any assaults happened said she did not have any kind of relationship with Snyder.
Snyder was ordered by District Court Judge Brent Weigle to undergo an examination for criminal competency and responsibility. A hearing on the latest report was held last week. Court records show during the hearing, Weigle turned down a request by Snyder’s attorney Lisa Hanna to conduct an independent evaluation.
Snyder is being held on a $10 million bond. No date has been sent for his next court appearance.
