(LANSING) – Officials are warning about a scam that pretends to come from a State of Michigan Department.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is alerting consumers of a scam in which fraudsters are impersonating her Consumer Protection Team.
The scammers are using technology to have their intended victims’ caller ID show the call coming from the “Consumer Protection Division” while using a real phone number connected with the Attorney General’s Department. The scammers falsely claim that the recipient’s information has been “flagged” with credit agencies and their credit cards and banking accounts will be shut down soon if they don’t make an immediate payment.
Nessel says her office will never call to demand money or ask for consumers to pay a fee to resolve a “flagged” account. She says the Department does not shut down accounts or negotiate credit card debt over the phone.
Nessel cautions consumers to never give out personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.
If you think you’ve received a scam call from the Attorney General’s Office or to report a scam, you can call the AG’s Consumer Protection Team at 517-335-7599.
