(LANSING) – Seasonally adjusted jobless rates went up across Southern Michigan from June to July.
Data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says St. Joseph County’s unemployment increased from 4.9% in June to 6.3% in July, which is the largest increase in the area.
Branch County’s unemployment jumped from 4.4% to 5.1%. Hillsdale County went from 5.4% to 6.2% while Cass County jumped from 5.1% to 5.6%.
Statewide the unemployment rate up from 5% to 5.8%.
The unemployment increases in Southern Michigan and other parts of the State are typical for July, according to Wayne Rourke, Labor Market Information Director for the Michigan Center For Data and Analytics. He says regular annual payroll reductions in education and the State’s auto industry contributed to the jobless rate hikes.
