INDIANAPOLIS - At the direction of the CDC, the Indiana Department of Health is pausing the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after reports of an extremely rare side effect.
Indiana health officials are halting the use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine around the state after federal officials recommended a "pause" in its use to investigate reports of potentially dangerous blood clots.
The agency said Tuesday it was working with clinics around the state that planned to give the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to provide alternative vaccines.
It was found in six women aged 18 to 45 who'd received the Johnson & Johnson one-shot coronvirus vaccine who developed rare blood clots in their brains, prompting the government to recommend pausing using that vaccination.
About 125,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been given in Indiana, out of about 3.4 million total vaccine shots administered.
