(MIDDLEBURY) – A suspect is in custody after a police chase and a standoff during the overnight hours.
The Elkhart Police Department says just before 12 AM Friday, officers attempted to pull over a van in the area of Cassopolis Street and East Bristol Street, that had been reported stolen from Wisconsin. The driver of the van did not stop for police and led them on a chase.
Just after 12 AM Friday, officers say the van entered the eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road, but the pursuit ended when the van stopped at the Middlebury off-ramp exit.
Officers say the driver refused to get out of the van, even after police deployed chemicals inside the vehicle. The Elkhart County Regional SWAT Team was called to the scene and also deployed gas inside the vehicle.
At 5:30 AM, the driver finally got out of the vehicle thanks to the SWAT team and a K-9 officer.
The driver was taken to an area hospital. The matter is still under investigation.
