(UNDATED) – A man wanted in DeKalb County has been shot and killed by police in Fort Wayne.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says just after 7:15 AM Tuesday, DeKalb County Community Corrections asked the Fort Wayne Police Department to help find a man who was able to get out of DeKalb County custody.

Later Tuesday morning, Fort Wayne Police say the suspect was found on the campus of Purdue University Fort Wayne. The man was believed to be armed with a handgun near an apartment complex.

Officers spotted the man walking on campus towards a parking lot near the entrance off Coliseum and North Anthony Boulevards.

Fort Wayne Police Chief Scott Caudill says the man didn’t respond to commands from police, and officers saw that he had a gun. Just after 7:45 AM, officers told Fort Wayne Dispatch shots had been fired and the suspect had been shot.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and he has not yet been identified. The officer involved in the shooting was not injured. The shooting is under investigation.
