(COLDWATER) – A man involved in a stabbing incident last year has been given 30 months probation.
Branch County Circuit Court officials say 39 year old Adam Wallis of Marion, Indiana was given the sentence on Monday. On June 17 he plead no contest to a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
The Coldwater Department of Public Safety says on August 19, 2023, Wallis was a passenger in his brother’s car, and the victim was driving a pick up. Wallis and the victim started yelling at each other while driving west on Chicago Road just after 2:30 PM. Both vehicles stopped for a red light at the southbound ramps of I-69, when the altercation took place.
Police say Wallis stabbed the victim in the chest and then they fought in the street. Wallis reportedly threw the knife into a grassy field before getting back into his brother’s car. The victim told officers he thought Wallis was going to flee the scene, so he backed up his pickup in front of the car to prevent them from leaving.
Police say Wallis and another man were in Coldwater visiting a marijuana dispensary before the altercation.
Wallis was arrested at the scene, and officers were able to recover the knife. The victim was taken by Life Care Ambulance to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital and was treated for his injuries.
While under probation, Wallis is not allowed to possess alcohol, drugs or weapons. He must also stay out of bars and must pay over $5,000 in restitution.
