(DEKALB COUNTY) - The DeKalb County Commissioners have voted to halt payments to the DeKalb Humane Society after months of failed contract negotiations.
The Star reports the county has provided about $50,000 a year to the humane society for the past three years without a signed agreement. Commissioners say several proposed contracts were rejected, leading the board to suspend future payments.
County officials say they are now working with the City of Auburn to identify alternative ways to provide animal services for the city and unincorporated areas of DeKalb County.
Auburn officials told commissioners they faced similar contract issues and have decided not to renew their agreement with the humane society for 2026.
The DeKalb Humane Society disputes the county's version of events and says it continues to provide services while awaiting formal notice.
