(INDIANAPOLIS) - Some Hoosiers who get health coverage through the Healthy Indiana Plan will have to show they are working, studying, volunteering or in job training to keep that coverage starting January 1, 2027.

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration says the rule will apply to eligible HIP members between the ages of 19 and 64.

The requirement is 80 hours per month.

That can include a job, job training, part-time school or community service. People can combine those activities to reach 80 hours.

Some people will be exempt. Exemptions include pregnancy, caregiving responsibilities, medical frailty, substance use disorder treatment and recent release from incarceration.

The rule also has a look-back period.

Anyone applying for HIP in January 2027 will have to show they met the requirement in October, November and December of 2026.

People who apply later will have to show they met the requirement for the three months before they apply.

FSSA says compliance will be reviewed every three months using available information, including wage and program data.

Anyone who falls out of compliance will lose coverage immediately and must reapply.

FSSA plans to host regional town halls and webinars with more information. An information portal has also been added to the FSSA website.
