(COLDWATER) - The Branch County Election Commission will review a recall petition filed against Fourth Ward Coldwater City Councilman Scott Houtz later this month.

Coldwater resident Kyle Wallace submitted the petition to the Branch County Clerk's Office on June 5. The petition references a vote cast by Houtz on March 9 regarding a city ordinance.

The Election Commission's role is to determine whether the language in the petition meets Michigan's legal standards for clarity and factual accuracy.

The commission is scheduled to consider the petition during a meeting on June 25 at 3:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Board Room on the first floor of the Branch County Courthouse.

Residents who wish to address the commission regarding the petition must submit a written request to the board chair at least 24 hours before the meeting. Speakers will be limited to three minutes each.

If the petition is approved for clarity and factuality, the recall effort could move forward under Michigan election procedures.
