(PLEASANT LAKE) - Former Steuben County Emergency Management Director William "Bill" Brown has died at the age of 83.
Brown passed away Tuesday, June 2, at his home in Pleasant Lake.
The Steuben County Emergency Management Agency announced Brown's passing Wednesday, noting his decades of service to the county as an Angola firefighter, Emergency Management director and longtime Emergency Management Agency volunteer following his retirement.
In a social media post, the agency said Brown remained active with Emergency Management and was known for stopping by the office for conversation and coffee.
Brown graduated from Hamilton High School in 1961 and married Sharon Gibbeny in 1963. During his career, he served on the Angola Fire Department, worked at Charleston Metal in Waterloo and later worked for Steuben County Emergency Management before retiring.
After retirement, Brown operated Bill's Sewing Machine Repair Business before retiring a second time.
Brown was also an amateur radio operator, a member of the local Ham Radio Club and Sky Warn, and maintained an active Emergency Management credential.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Brown Kurtz of Garrett, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and his brother, Kenneth Brown of Pleasant Lake.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 8, from 11 a.m. until noon at Weicht Funeral Home in Angola. Funeral services will begin at noon with burial to follow at Jordan Cemetery near Fremont.
Memorial donations may be made to the Angola Fire Department.
