(DEKALB COUNTY) - A Kendallville man was hurt Monday night after deputies say he crashed while trying to avoid a deer. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened around 9:42 p.m. in the 800 block of County Road 34. Investigators say 34-year-old Kenneth Allen Frey was headed east when a deer darted into the road. Frey swerved, sending his Dodge Durango off the north side of the roadway. The SUV plunged into a ditch and slammed into an electrical power pole -- destroying the pole and knocking out power in the surrounding area. Frey suffered facial injuries and cuts to his mouth and jaw. He was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center, where he was last listed in stable condition. Deputies say alcohol is believed to be a factor, and the crash remains under investigation.
