(COLUMBUS) - Ohio Senate Republicans have approved a bill that would allow lawsuits against cities and townships that pass gun regulations stricter than state law.

The measure would let individuals take legal action against local governments and could require those communities to pay damages, court costs, and legal fees if found in violation.

Supporters say the bill is meant to protect constitutional gun rights and ensure firearm laws are consistent statewide.

Opponents, including some city leaders and Democratic lawmakers, argue it weakens local control and limits the ability of communities to address gun violence with their own safety measures.

The proposal now moves forward as lawmakers continue debating the balance between state authority and local decision-making on gun policy.
