(INDIANA) - The Indiana Department of Transportation is marking the start of the 2026 construction and maintenance season, as more than 1,000 projects get underway across the state.

State officials say $2.6 billion in transportation projects are planned this year, including improvements to traffic flow and safety, along with resurfacing or replacing more than 6,200 lane miles.

With construction increasing statewide, drivers are being reminded to slow down and stay alert in work zones. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most work zone injuries and fatalities involve drivers or their passengers.

State data shows 16 people were killed and more than 1,500 injured in Indiana work zones in 2025.

INDOT is also continuing several safety initiatives, including the Safe Zones speed enforcement program and new visibility equipment for workers aimed at reducing crashes.

Drivers can check real-time traffic conditions and construction updates through INDOT's TrafficWise system or mobile app.
