(INDIANAPOLIS) - A federal judge has blocked Indiana's ban on using student IDs at the polls, meaning eligible college IDs can still be used in the May 5 primary election.

U.S. District Judge Richard Young issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday, stopping enforcement of Senate Bill 10, the 2025 law that removed college-issued IDs from Indiana's list of acceptable voter identification.

In his ruling, Young wrote that the state had offered no evidence that student IDs had ever caused voter fraud or election problems, noting Indiana had accepted them for nearly 20 years before the law changed.

The lawsuit was filed by Count US IN, Women4Change Indiana and an Indiana University student, who argued the law unfairly burdened younger voters. The court estimated the ban could have affected nearly 40,000 students statewide.

Because of the injunction, student IDs that include a name, photo and expiration date can now be used again at Indiana polling places while the case continues. State officials have said they plan to appeal.
