(ANGOLA) - The City of Angola has installed new flashing safety lights at school crosswalks, a major visibility upgrade city leaders say is aimed at protecting students walking and biking near school zones.

The project is a joint effort between the Angola Police Department and the city Street Department, with the new lights now active near local schools.

City officials say the brighter flashing signals are designed to give drivers a stronger visual warning when students are crossing.

Student safety remains a top priority, especially during busy arrival and dismissal times when children are moving through school corridors on foot and by bike.

Drivers are being reminded to slow down, stay off their phones and watch carefully for students whenever the crosswalk lights are flashing.

City leaders say the new system is part of Angola's broader effort to improve pedestrian safety around schools and reduce the risk of crosswalk crashes.
