(SOUTH BEND) - An Iran-linked cybercrime group says it has breached the computer systems of St. Joseph County in northern Indiana, claiming access to sensitive county data.

The group, Handala Hack, posted online Wednesday that it had taken control of parts of the county's IT infrastructure and claimed to have stolen large amounts of information from county agencies.

The hackers allege the data includes records tied to county employees, police reports, court documents, health records and other sensitive files.

However, county officials say the incident appears to be limited to a third-party faxing system, not the county's broader internal network.

The same group recently drew national attention after claiming responsibility for hacking the personal email of FBI Director Kash Patel.

It remains unclear how much of the hackers' claims involving St. Joseph County can be independently verified.

County officials have not indicated any known impacts beyond the faxing platform issue reported Wednesday.

The incident comes amid a broader rise in cyberattacks linked to Iran-backed groups since the escalation of the war in Iran
