(COLON) - The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a child in Colon.

Sheriff Chad Spence says in the early morning hours on Tuesday, deputies responded to the 400 block of North Swan Street for a report of a missing five year old child.

A search was conducted and the boy, identified as Adam Clemans, was found unconscious in a stream between Palmer Lake and Sturgeon Lake. Lifesaving measures were started at the scene, and Adam was then transported to Beacon Health & Fitness Three Rivers where he was later pronounced dead.

Assisting deputies in the search were the St. Joseph County Dive Rescue; the Branch County Sheriff's Office; the Colon, Coldwater and White Pigeon Police Departments, the Michigan State Police and the Colon Township Fire and Rescue.

The incident remains under investigation.

In loving support of Adam's family, the St. Joseph County United Way is opening a Family Catastrophic Fund. 100% of all donations will be paid directly to the funeral home and will go specifically toward funeral expenses during this incredibly difficult time.
