(COLDWATER) - Coldwater police are investigating a weekend break-in at a local business that resulted in the theft of a large amount of copper and significant property damage.

The incident occurred between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:45 a.m. Sunday, February 22, at American Copper and Brass on South Michigan Avenue.

According to police, an unknown Black male suspect entered the building overnight and stole copper coils and scrap copper. Investigators believe the suspect was driving an SUV similar to a Ford Expedition and used the vehicle to pull a stolen U-Haul trailer loaded with the stolen materials.

Authorities say the suspect caused extensive damage while gaining access to the building.

Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Sarah Gunneman at 517-278-4525.

The theft of the U-Haul trailer is being investigated separately by the Branch County Sheriff's Office. Anyone with information about that case is asked to call the sheriff's office at 517-278-2325.
