(TOLEDO) - Doctors in Toledo have performed the region's first BATMAN procedure, a complex minimally invasive technique for patients who cannot undergo open-heart surgery, according to WTVG-TV.

The procedure -- Balloon-Assisted Translocation of the Mitral Anterior Leaflet -- uses multiple catheters to reshape the heart's mitral valve before implanting a new tissue valve. It is typically reserved for high-risk patients with serious medical conditions.

The surgery was completed at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where physicians reported the patient was discharged after three days.

BATMAN procedures have been performed at only a limited number of hospitals nationwide, making the Toledo operation a regional milestone.
