Indiana Hospitals Launch Campaign Targeting Insurance Coverage Denials

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Hospital Association has launched a statewide campaign accusing major insurers of blocking access to medically necessary care for patients.

The initiative, called "Access Denied," includes an online portal detailing how coverage decisions can delay or prevent treatment, along with media reports and a tool allowing residents to submit their own experiences.

Association President Scott B. Tittle said insurers are creating barriers that leave patients waiting for care while conditions worsen and are pressuring independent medical providers struggling to remain open.

The group cited polling showing widespread public frustration with insurance companies, with many respondents saying insurers prioritize profits and have contributed to rising health care costs.

According to the association, two companies -- Elevance Health (formerly Anthem) and UnitedHealthcare -- control the majority of Indiana's commercial insurance market, giving them significant influence over which treatments are approved and which providers patients can use.

A recent state-commissioned report found Indiana hospitals have reduced commercial prices in recent years, while national comparisons show the state's health care costs trending lower than those in many other states.

Hospital leaders argue insurers should pass those savings on to patients rather than restricting coverage or narrowing provider networks.

Tittle said he supports ongoing legislative efforts aimed at protecting patients' access to care and preserving independent medical practices.
