(ANGOLA) - An Angola High School language arts teacher has been arrested on multiple charges, including drug-related offenses and operating while intoxicated.

Steuben County Sheriff's Deputies on Friday charged 49-year-old Debra McGillem with Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, and OWI. McGillem, who lives in Michigan, has taught at Angola High School since 2017.

WLKI received numerous tips from parents and students regarding an alleged incident inside a classroom on Friday, but those reports have not been confirmed by law enforcement or school officials.

Superintendent Matt Widenhoefer released a statement acknowledging a staff member had been arrested and said the district is conducting its own investigation. He added that disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with school policy.

If convicted on all counts, McGillem faces up to three and a half years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
