(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Education is encouraging schools and community organizations to sign up for the 2026 Summer Food Service Program, an effort aimed at making sure children don't go hungry when school is out.

The program reimburses approved sponsors for serving free, healthy meals and snacks to children 18 and younger during the summer months. Eligible sponsors include public and private nonprofit groups such as school corporations, local governments, summer camps, religious organizations and recreation centers.

State officials say they are especially focused on expanding access in rural areas without traditional meal sites, as well as in communities with concentrations of migrant farm workers. Non-congregate meal service options may be available in those areas.

Nearly 200 sponsors operated more than 1,000 meal sites across Indiana last summer, serving over 3.5 million meals. Many locations also offered educational and recreational activities alongside meal service.

The federally funded program is administered by the state and operates through reimbursements based on the number of meals served. Any child 18 or younger can receive meals by visiting a participating site.

New sponsors must apply by April 30. More details on eligibility and requirements are available through the Indiana Department of Education.

State officials say expanding participation is key to ensuring children have reliable access to nutritious food throughout the summer.
