(BUTLER) - The city of Butler is under a boil water advisory after a major water main break Thursday morning.

City officials say the break happened just after 11 a.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Main Street, one of the city's busiest areas. Crews had to drain the city's water tower to complete repairs, leaving residents without normal water pressure.

Repairs to the main are expected to take between 12 and 16 hours. Once repairs are complete, the boil water advisory will remain in effect for at least 48 additional hours while water quality testing is conducted.

Until the advisory is lifted, residents are instructed to boil tap water for at least one minute before drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or preparing food. Butler has a population of about 2,600 people.

City crews are continuing repair work, and officials say updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

Meanwhile, a separate boil water advisory was issued Thursday for a small section of Auburn. Residents along Pennsylvania Avenue were advised to boil water for 24 hours after a water main repair as a precaution.
