(COLUMBUS) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging motorists to use caution as Winter Storm Fern continues to affect travel conditions across the state.

Since the storm arrived Jan. 24, troopers have responded to more than 2,700 incidents statewide, including traffic crashes and calls to assist stranded motorists.

Gov. Mike DeWine said that although the heaviest snowfall has moved out of the state, many roadways remain slick and dangerous. He encouraged residents who must travel to follow guidance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and carry a winter travel kit.

The patrol said the safest way to avoid winter travel emergencies is to stay off the roads until conditions improve. For essential travel, troopers recommend conducting a pre-trip vehicle inspection, including checking tire pressure and tread, ensuring the battery is in good condition and filling the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

Motorists are also advised to carry a winter travel kit that includes items such as an ice scraper, shovel, jumper cables, flashlight with extra batteries, blankets, warm clothing, a cell phone charger, first aid supplies, water and nonperishable food.

Drivers are urged to use caution when driving on snow- or ice-covered roads by accelerating and braking gradually, increasing following distances and avoiding sudden steering movements. If a vehicle begins to skid, troopers advise easing off the pedals and steering in the direction the driver intends to go rather than slamming on the brakes.

If motorists become stuck or are involved in a crash, the patrol recommends moving safely off the roadway if possible, activating hazard lights and calling for assistance. Remaining inside the vehicle is advised when it can be done safely.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said it will continue monitoring conditions and responding to incidents as Winter Storm Fern moves through the region.
