(ANN ARBOR) - An attorney for former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore says she is seeking dismissal of criminal charges filed against him, declaring he is innocent of the allegations.
Moore, who was fired earlier this month, faces three charges including felony home invasion and stalking. Prosecutors allege Moore entered a woman's apartment on Dec. 10, blamed her for his firing and threatened to harm himself while holding kitchen utensils.
In court Thursday, defense attorney Ellen Michaels said she has filed a motion to quash the arrest warrant issued for Moore, arguing it was based on inaccurate information.
"This warrant was issued based on false and misleading statements presented as facts," Michaels told reporters outside the courthouse. She said without those statements, there would be no probable cause for the charges.
Moore, 39, has pleaded not guilty and is currently free on bond with electronic monitoring. He declined to comment following the hearing.
The University of Michigan fired Moore after determining he had a personal relationship with a woman who was a member of the football staff and later lied during the internal investigation, according to the university's athletic director.
Washtenaw County Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski told the court she had just received the defense filing. Judge Cedric Simpson scheduled the next hearing for Feb. 17.
Prosecutors allege the woman cooperated with the university after ending the relationship and said Moore told her, "My blood is on your hands," according to court records.
Moore attended Thursday's hearing with his wife, Kelli, and waited in a nearby courtroom as more than 20 members of the media gathered for the proceedings.
Moore coached the Wolverines for two seasons after succeeding Jim Harbaugh, who left the program following a national championship season to coach the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers.
