(Zeeland Township, MI) - Authorities have reopened I-196 after a massive pileup involving more than 100 vehicles shut down the highway for most of the day Monday.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says the crash occurred along westbound I-196 near Hudsonville around 10:19 a.m. Deputies reported numerous slide-offs and several jackknifed semi trucks during the incident.

Officials say between nine to 12 people were injured. No fatalities were reported.

Both lanes of I-196 remained closed for more than seven hours as crews worked to treat patients and clear vehicles from the roadway. The road has since reopened.

The sheriff's office worked alongside Michigan State Police and the Zeeland Police Department to transport injured drivers to area hospitals.

Buses from Hudsonville High School and Max Transit were used to shuttle stranded motorists to the high school, which served as a Red Cross emergency shelter while drivers arranged transportation home.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office thanked multiple law enforcement agencies, fire departments, ambulance crews, towing services, school officials, and local businesses for assisting during the lengthy response and cleanup.
