(DETROIT)Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is urging state lawmakers to approve the next budget by June 30, saying she wants to avoid delays like last year.

Speaking Thursday at the Detroit Auto Show, Whitmer said the House and Senate should reach a deal and send it to her before the end of June. In 2025, lawmakers did not deliver the budget until Oct. 7.

That spending plan totaled 81 billion dollars for the current fiscal year.

Whitmer also said she wants to permanently expand the Michigan Reconnect program to include 21-year-olds and has directed the state to explore geologic hydrogen as a potential clean energy source.

Lawmakers set a July 1 deadline for approving a budget in 2019, but there are no penalties if the deadline is missed.
