(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hoosiers from across Indiana are set to gather at the Statehouse this week to call for changes aimed at making healthcare more affordable and accessible as costs continue to rise statewide.

A Hoosier Healthcare Day of Action is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Indiana General Assembly, where residents, faith leaders, healthcare workers, and advocates will hold a press conference urging lawmakers to address medical debt, expand access to healthcare and dental care, and ensure fair wages for healthcare workers.

Organizers say many Indiana families are struggling with rising insurance premiums, surprise medical bills, Medicaid barriers, and hospital closures. Surveys show more than half of Hoosiers have delayed or gone without medical or dental care because of cost, while nearly one in five Indiana residents carries medical debt in collections.

The issue has intensified in recent years, with marketplace healthcare premiums in Indiana increasing by an average of 20.5 percent in 2026, and in some cases more than doubling. Advocates warn that recent federal and state cuts to Indiana's Medicaid programs could further worsen the situation, particularly for Hoosiers with disabilities who rely on those services.

The press conference will take place from 10:40 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on the third-floor north atrium of the Indiana Statehouse. Speakers will include faith leaders, healthcare workers, Medicaid recipients, and policy experts who plan to share personal stories and call on legislators to take action.

Those participating say the event is meant to highlight the real-life impact of healthcare costs and push for solutions that protect the health and financial stability of Indiana families.
