(INDIANPOLIS) - Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales and Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read have put state pride -- and snacks -- on the line ahead of Friday night's Peach Bowl semifinal.
Morales announced the friendly wager Thursday as Indiana University prepares to face the University of Oregon with a spot in the national championship at stake.
If Indiana wins, Read will send Morales Oregon hazelnuts, the state's official nut. If Oregon wins, Morales will ship Indiana-grown popcorn -- the Hoosier State's official snack -- to Salem.
"As a proud IU alum, I couldn't be more excited to watch our undefeated Hoosiers take the national stage," Morales said. "Oregon's a great opponent, but I'll be happy to enjoy some hazelnuts once the Hoosiers handle business."
Read fired back with confidence of his own. "Bring. It. On," he said. "From Autzen to Atlanta, our Ducks play with heart, discipline, and pride. I'm looking forward to another Oregon win -- and that Indiana popcorn."
The Peach Bowl kicks off Friday, January 9, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game airs on ESPN and will also stream on Fubo.
Morales has made similar wagers with other secretaries of state during major matchups, continuing a lighthearted tradition of interstate rivalry -- and bragging rights -- tied to big games.
