Fort Wayne Woman To Avoid Jail Time For Neglecting Her Toddler
Thursday, December 19, 2019

A Fort Wayne woman who admitted to neglecting her toddler, resulting in severe injuries, will avoid jail time thanks to a plea agreement.

Mercedes Tyree was initially charged with two felony child neglect charges. Tyree pleaded down to one county of neglect of a dependent when the dependent is put in a situation that endangers them, a level 6 felony. In court on Wednesday, the judge sentenced her to a 2-year and 183 day suspended sentence.

Conditions of the plea deal include Tyree to undergo a mental health evaluation and any necessary treatment as well as to take parenting classes.

Tyree and her boyfriend, Zachary Copeland, were arrested after the then-2-year-old was brought to an Allen County hospital last November with bruises on much of her body where doctors later discovered a skull fracture and bleeding on the brain.

Copeland also pleaded down to one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in injury. The judge handed him a 6-year sentence with two suspended, which means he will spend four years behind bars.

Stipulations in the plea agreement call for Copeland to undergo a substance abuse evaluation, seek mental health treatment, and obtain a high school diploma or GED.
