(LANSING) - Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she will not seek the presidency in 2028.
Whitmer made the announcement Thursday during a press conference in Lansing, saying she plans to remain focused on governing Michigan and completing her remaining priorities in office.
Whitmer had been viewed by many national political observers as a possible Democratic presidential candidate and a potential contender with appeal among Midwestern voters.
Her decision removes one of the party's highest-profile governors from early discussions surrounding the 2028 Democratic presidential race.
