(ANGOLA) - The Steuben County Sheriff's Office is investigating a serious crash on U.S. 20 early this morning near West Otter Lake in Jackson Township.

Deputies were called out just after 4 a.m. on a report of a collision between a semi and a passenger car. When first responders arrived, they found the car's driver unconscious and trapped inside. Crews from the Orland Fire Department freed the victim, who was rushed to Parkview Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The semi-driver was not seriously hurt. Investigators say 74-year-old Edward Nix of rural Angola was driving eastbound in a 2023 Kia when he crossed the center line on a curve and struck a westbound semi driven by 55-year-old Pedro Garcia of East Chicago. Garcia tried to swerve onto the shoulder, but the vehicles still collided nearly head-on. Seatbelts were in use, airbags deployed, and deputies noted foggy, wet conditions at the time. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The Steuben County FACT Team, Indiana State Police, and Angola Police assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
