(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Governor Mike Braun says he will sign legislation Wednesday that could allow a casino to be built in northeast Indiana, but only if voters approve it first.

Braun told 21Alive he would have vetoed the bill if lawmakers had not restored a requirement allowing residents in Steuben, DeKalb, and Allen counties to decide the issue through a referendum.

The referendum will appear on the November 2026 ballot, asking voters in each county whether inland casino gambling should be permitted.

Only counties where voters approve the measure would be eligible to compete for a casino license.

If the referendum passes, casino companies would have until Dec. 1 to submit development proposals. State officials would then select a winning proposal by April of next year.
