(FORT WAYNE) - With more snow on the way and temperatures expected to plunge below zero, animal welfare officials in our area are urging pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe during extreme cold. Leaders at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control say dangerously low temperatures pose serious risks to pets, especially those left outdoors for extended periods.

Shelter officials stress that if conditions feel too cold for people, they are also too cold for pets. Dogs and cats should not be left outside for long periods during bitter weather. Short-haired and smaller dogs are particularly vulnerable to frostbite, but even thick-coated breeds need strict limits on outdoor exposure.

Owners with outdoor pets are urged to bring them inside whenever possible. For animals that must remain outside, be sure to provide sturdy shelter with solid walls, a roof without holes, and a warm, protected space.

Pet owners are also encouraged to check their animals' paws. Long hair between paw pads should be trimmed, as ice can quickly build up, leading to cracking skin or frostbite.

Shelter officials say small steps taken ahead of time can make a significant difference, helping ensure pets stay warm, healthy, and safe as winter weather intensifies across northeast Indiana.
