ADRIAN, Mich. – Trine University softball extended their winning streak to 22 straight after sweeping their hosts from Adrian College. The second of the two games required seventh inning heroics by the Thunder to secure a walk off victory.
Trine opened the day with a 5-1 win. The offense opened the scoring in the first inning of play, with Debbie Hill bringing in a run with a double to right center. The team added three more runs in the second to build a 4-0 lead. Ashleigh Tranter singled for one of those runs while Macy Rocha came up with a single to plate the other two.
The team built their largest lead of the game in the fourth, when Scarlett Elliott led off with a solo homerun.
Hill pitched the game for the Thunder, only allowing a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on the way to the 5-1 win. She allowed four hits in the contest and one walk while striking out six.
The Thunder found themselves in a bit of a pitcher's duel in the second game of the day. Despite Trine batters reaching base in the first two innings, the game was scoreless through three and a half innings. Alexis Michon led the defensive effort from the circle for the Thunder ultimately turning in a stellar performance that included 14 strikeouts.
Rocha reached base on an error to start the bottom of the fourth inning. Hill followed quickly with her sixth home run of the season.
It was the Bulldogs that scored next with their first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. They scored again in the top of the seventh, this time off a home run of their own.
With the threat of extra innings, Elliott singled to leadoff the seventh for the Thunder. She moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs she then found her way home on another wild pitch, walking off the game with her smart baserunning.
Trine improves to 26-1 overall and 4-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. They will return home for their next competition, hosting Calvin University for a pair of games on Saturday, April 13. Opening pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
