Tuesday, May 9, 2023

LAGRANGE, IN - A suspect is in custody after leading authorities on a three county chase on the Indiana Toll Road over the weekend.

Indiana State Police say they received a call Saturday about a semi that was allegedly stolen from a trucking company by a terminated employee. The suspect was supposedly heading east on the Toll Road.

A trooper located the semi at 12:40 PM as it got off the Toll Road at the Notre Dame exit in St. Joseph County. As the trooper turned on his emergency lights, the semi driver went through some orange traffic cones before getting to the toll booth, and got back on the Toll Road and continued east.

The semi went through Elkhart County and was able to avoid several sets of stop sticks that had been put down. The truck did hit more stop sticks as the got closer to LaGrange County.

Troopers say the driver of the semi, 31 year old Durrell Kelley of Bear, Delaware, called 911 during the pursuit and spoke with a dispatcher, who in turn encouraged him to pull over. Kelley finally did pull over in LaGrange County, near the 114 mile marker.

Kelley was taken into custody and transported to the LaGrange County Jail on charges of theft, resisting law enforcement, and reckless driving.

The LaGrange County Humane Society took possession of a dog that was in the semi, until it could be reunited with its family.
