FREMONT, IN — Family, friends, and the entire community continue to mourn a mother and her three children whose lives were taken during a Saturday morning fire in Fremont.

Steuben County dispatch received a 911 call reporting the house fire at 5:02 AM located at 400 East Toledo Street in Fremont. The Fremont Fire Department arrived at the scene at 5:09 AM where the fire was still active.

Firefighters located three children and one adult female inside the burning home. All four victims were transported to Cameron Hospital in Angola, IN.

The three children were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities report the mother was flown from Cameron by Parkview Samaritan helicopter to the burn center at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne where she eventually succumbed to her injuries.

Pastors and churches in Fremont organized a candlelight vigil held of the weekend.

At this time, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is currently still conducting their investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.
Preliminarily, reports says the fire appears to have started on the second floor in an area that was not occupied at the time.  At this early stage of the investigation, it appears all four occupants were believed to be in a single bedroom.

The investigation will take time to complete, and that information may not be readily available for some time.
