FREMONT, IN — Sad news Saturday afternoon from Northeast Indiana as a mother and three children have died following a fire.
Authorities say the cause is not yet known of the Saturday morning house fire that took place early Saturday morning, which took the four lives.
According to a news release from the Indiana State Police and the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office, Steuben County dispatch received a 911 call reporting the house fire at 5:02 AM located at 400 East Toledo Street in Fremont, IN. The Fremont Fire Department arrived at the scene at 5:09 AM where the fire was still active.
Firefighters located three children and one adult female inside the burning home. All four victims were transported to Cameron Hospital in Angola, IN.
The three children were pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities report the mother was flown from Cameron by Parkview Samaritan helicopter to the burn center at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN. She eventually succumbed to her injuries and died after being transferred.
At this time, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting an on-scene investigation to figure out the cause of the fire. It has been reported by the State Fire Marshal’s Office that the fire looks to have started on the second floor of the home.
All four victims were found together in one bedroom.
The Steuben County Coroner’s office has confirmed the identities of the victims, which have not yet been released.
Autopsies are expected to take place Sunday.
Autopsies for the three children and the mother will be conducted by the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center in Fort Wayne, which will serve to confirm the cause and manner of death.
This is an active ongoing investigation. As noted in the release, Indiana State Police will be working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Steuben County Coroner’s Office to see if there was a “criminal element” to the fire.
In addition to the Fremont Fire Department, fire units from Angola, Orland, and Ashley-Hudson Fire Departments were also sent to the scene. Other agencies working on scene include the Indiana State Police, Indiana State Fire Marshals Office, Fremont Police, Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Steuben County Coroner’s Office.
No other information is available at this time. Once information becomes available, there will be an update sent out by the Indiana State Police- Fort Wayne Post.
