(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Abbott Nutrition plant in Sturgis did not maintain sanitary conditions and procedures.
That is what was reported by the Food and Drug Administration in findings released Tuesday by their inspectors. The organization has been on site in Sturgis doing inspections since January. Abbott Nutrition voluntarily recalled three powder formulas: Similac, Alimentum and EleCare. The recall was done after four consumer complaints related to Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport in infants who had consumed the powder infant formulas.
The FDA says its inspection ended last week. The report says Abbott failed to maintain sanitary conditions and procedures at the Sturgis plant. It says Abbott didn't maintain clean surfaces used in producing and handling the powdered formula. In addition, inspectors found a history of contamination with the Cronobacter bacteria, including eight instances between fall 2019 and February of this year.
The report gives the agency's preliminary findings and is likely to be followed by a formal report and a warning to the company. Neither the FDA or Abbott has been able to explain what caused the contamination.
Abbott posted a statement that it is "taking this very seriously and working closely with the FDA to implement corrective actions."
The products under recall have a multi digit number on the bottom of the container starting with the first two digits 22 through 37, contains K8, SH, or Z2 and with an expiration date of April 1, 2022, or after.
