(LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP) – A former St. Joseph County Commissioner is planning to run for a seat on the Commission once again.
Rick Shaffer, a longtime Lockport Township resident and key figure in local healthcare and government, is announcing his candidacy for Second District County Commissioner. On the ballot during the August 4 Primary Election, the Second District Seat will represent Florence and Lockport Townships, along with a part of Fabius Township and part of the City of Three Rivers.
Shaffer says as a former County Commissioner with over 20 years of service and experience, he looks forward to serving again as the “historic voice of reason”.
Widely known in St. Joseph County for his many years of advocacy for youth and senior programs, the 67 year old Shaffer currently works as the Director of Outreach Patient Services for Covered Bridge Healthcare.
Over five decades, his career has included the roles of funeral/ambulance service, pediatric nursing manager, nursing home administrator, 59th District State Representative, director of home care and hospice, two separate terms on the County Commission and most recently, Covered Bridge Healthcare CEO.
A 30 year Three Rivers Rotarian and 2001 Three Rivers Citizen of the Year, Shaffer also chairs the Community Mental Health board and participates on several county boards: including the St. Joseph County United Way, Centreville Downtown Development Authority, Community Action Agency, St. Joseph County Planning, Parks and Recreation, and the St. Joseph County Animal Advisory Board. Through his church, he has made 20 annual trips to deliver medical missionary services in Haiti and/or the Dominican Republic.
Shaffer says that the current County Commissioners work well together, and appreciates that the Second District post, which is newly created as part of the Commission’s expansion from five to seven members, is an “open seat” that does not put any of the current Commissioners in conflict with each other.
