By: Sheila McCrea - Tuesday, September 14, 2021

FREMONT, IN – Multiple agencies were called to a hazardous material leak from a semi at the Pilot Truck Stop just north of the Fremont Outlet Mall Tuesday morning.

The leak was reportedly nitric acid. The incident resulted in a six mile shutdown of I-69 from the Pokagon Exit 354 in Steuben County and the Kinderhook Exit at Copeland Road in Michigan.

The truck stop was evacuated after the leak was reported just after 7 a.m. and nearby residents were told to shelter in place.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the leak is under investigation.

The closure lasted until early afternoon, and caused a considerable amount of traffic issues.

Officers with the Sheriffs Department from Steuben and Branch Counties along with the State Police from both Indiana and Michigan directed traffic. Fire departments from Fremont, Angola and Branch County’s Lakeland Township responded along with Haz Mat teams from northeast Indiana.
