ANGOLA – Mosquitoes that have the West Nile Virus has been found in Northeast Indiana.
The Steuben County Health Department says they detected the virus in a pool of mosquitoes that has been collected in the northwest portion of the County on August 19. So far, there have been no reported cases of the virus in humans in Steuben County.
Health Department officials say that even though temperatures are cooler in the morning and evening hours, mosquitoes will stay active if temperatures are above 60 degrees. That means the chance of being bitten is still present. Health officials say the public should take the normal steps to help prevent mosquito bites. That includes the use of insect repellent that has the ingredient DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or picaradin. This should be applied to clothes and any exposed skin. Also repair or install screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
If you do go outside, you should wear pants and shirts with long sleeves, especially if you are going to be in a marshy or wooded area. The chance of a person contracting West Nile Virus will continue until the first hard freeze happens this fall. Anyone who thinks they may have contracted West Nile Virus should contact a doctor be tested and get treatment.
