STURGIS – It looks like a Sturgis road project won't be happening as soon as planned.
Sturgis City Officials received noticed Monday from the Michigan Department of Transportation that the Vinewood-East Congress Street Improvement Project that was approved last week by the City Commission is now delayed indefinitely. The reason for the delay is an issue at the State level, and the fact that a portion of the grant funds for this project, and others around the State, have been reserved but not formally appropriated by the State Legislature and the Governor. The funding in question is through MDOT's Highway Infrastructure Program,
Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act. The City's funding for the project is $71,370. While these funds are not at risk of being lost by this delay, according to MDOT the project cannot incur any costs until the supplemental appropriation is approved by the Legislature and the Governor. Moving forward could mean the loss of funding for Sturgis.
