STURGIS – The City of Sturgis and the Sturgis Area Community Foundation are going to partner together to help the community.
During Wednesday's meeting, the Sturgis City Commission was presented with a proposal from the Foundation to provide utility customers a way to invest and make a difference in their community with a Round Up option on their utility bill. Sturgis City Manager Mike Hughes says utility customers would be given the option to round up their utility bill each month. The extra money would go into a fund at the Foundation. Those funds would then be used for projects in the Sturgis service area. Hughes says the City and the Foundation would work together to decided on what projects the money would be used for.
Foundation Executive Director Lindsay Richardson says this program is similar to what other communities are doing. She says LaGrange County has been doing this for quite awhile and successfully. The Commission approved the recommendation by a unanimous vote.
