DEKALB COUNTY - Tuesday morning, 34-year-old Nicholas Chalmers of Fort Wayne died after his vehicle came into contact with a garbage truck parked in front of a private residence.

According to a Sheriff's report the driver of the garbage truck, Bryan Horvath, parked in front of a private residence and was out of the vehicle to dump the trash bin into the truck's trash receptacle. Chalmers struck the rear of the truck with its front end and Horvath was struck by the trash container lift arm and as the truck was propelled forward from impact.

Chalmers died at the scene and a passenger in his vehicle, Philip Nason Jr., was transported to Parkview Regional Hospital in critical condition after extraction.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department was assisted by Parkview EMS, Jackson Fire & Rescue and Indiana State Police.
