ANGOLA, IND. -- Sophomore Tara Bieniewicz (Chesterfield, Mich./Dakota) scored a career-high 21 points as the Trine University women's basketball team posted a dominant win against Adrian (Mich.) College, 86-39, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at the MTI Center.
The 47-point victory against the Bulldogs was Trine's second largest margin of victory this season (49-point win against Saint Mary's in early December) and continued its current win streak which is now up to 11 straight games.
Bieniewicz scored her game and career-high 21 points on seven-of-eight shooting (87.5 percent) and was five-of-six (83.3 percent) from three-point range. Sophomore Sophia Kreag (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) was second in scoring at 12 points with seven of her points coming at the free-throw line (seven-of-eight overall).
Sophomore Kayla Wildman (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) rounded out the Trine high scorers with 11 points. In addition, senior Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) had a game-high seven assists to go along with five rebounds and seven points. Freshman Sam Underhill (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) had a team-best nine rebounds.
Trine (19-4, 13-1 MIAA) outscored the Bulldogs, 26-10, in the first quarter and quickly jumped out to a double-figure lead within the first 4:30 en route to having a 12-point advantage at the 3:55 mark following a three-pointer by Bieniewicz. Leading by 10 points, 20-10, with 2:02 to go in the period, the Thunder finished with a 6-0 scoring run that ended in a jumper by sophomore Kelsy Taylor (Louisville, Ky./New Albany) to make it a 26-10 ball game after one quarter.
The Thunder continued to pull away in the second quarter thanks to a 23-8 scoring margin in the frame. Adrian (9-14, 3-11 MIAA) trailed by 12 points when another Bieniewicz triple ignited a 22-1 run that blew the game open as the Thunder led by 33 points at that point, 49-16, with a little over a minute on the clock before halftime. The final points came on a pair of Adrian free-throws, but Trine maintained a sizeable advantage at the break, 49-18.
In the third quarter, Trine posted its third straight quarter scoring 20 or more points and began the period with a 13-2 run to balloon the lead to 42 points, 62-20, at the 4:19 mark. Trine went on to lead by as many as 46 points in the period thanks to a layup by Wildman with 1:17 left en route to taking a 73-30 advantage into the final quarter.
Trine opened fourth quarter play with a 9-3 scoring advantage to post its largest lead of the game of 49 points following two free-throws by freshman Sophie Sloneker (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe). The Thunder matched their large lead of 49 points two more times before the clock hit zeros as Trine cruised to the 86-39 final.
Trine will host its final regular-season home game on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when the Thunder host Kalamazoo (Mich.) College in a MIAA matchup. It will be senior night with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
