A teenage suspect is dead after a shooting at a school in eastern Indiana.
Indiana State Police said that a shooting at David W. Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond has resulted in the death of the suspect. Police say the situation began around 8 a.m.
Investigative reports say that someone warned police that someone could be on the way to the school to "commit a violent act." Officers responded quickly and confronted the suspect outside of the school. The Indiana State Police said that the suspect exchanged gunfire with police before turning the gun on himself.
No other students were injured in the Thursday morning incident.
ISP officials say that the school enacted lock down procedures at around around 8:40 a.m. Just after 9 a.m., the district said the school was secure following an active shooter situation.
Students from the school were transported to Richmond High School until they could be connected with their parents.
At this point all other schools in the city of Richmond have resumed classes and will have regular scheduled dismissal times; however the city district has canceled afternoon preschool classes.
Indiana State Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick released a statement on shooting and said she is in contact with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, the Indiana State Police, and Governor Holcomb and is actively monitoring the situation. Dr. McCormick said she has full confidence in Richmond Community Schools’ Superintendent Todd Terrill and his team, law enforcement, and first responders.
Details on events that led up to the shooting are still evolving.
The FBI is on scene assisting state and local authorities with the investigation.
