CROOKED LAKE, IN – A Fremont man has died following a Tuesday night motorcycle crash on West Orland Road near Crooked Lake.

The Indiana State Police is investigating the crash that happened around 9:30 PM, and took the life of 28-year-old Tyler Channing Szapkiw.

According to a preliminary investigation by the ISP, Szapkiw was operating a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the 2200 block of West Orland Road at a high rate of speed. During that time, authorities determined he failed to negotiate a curve in the road.

Reports indicate the motorcycle then ran off the road and struck a utility pole. Investigators say the force of impact snapped the utility pole in half.

Upon arrival, first units on the scene found Szapkiw unconscious and suffering from a serious head injury. Authorities say he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

A team of Steuben County EMS personnel provided initial medical treatment at the scene. Szapkiw was later flown from the scene by Lutheran Air to a Fort Wayne hospital where he later succumbed to his fatal injuries.

Assisting the Indiana State Police at the scene was the Angola Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Steuben Fire & EMS personnel, the Steuben County Highway Department, NIPSCO and Countryside Towing.
